NASA NICE MA 132 Concepts of Mathematics II

The implementation of information from the NASA NICE workshop at Elizabeth City State University was quite useful. In MA 132 Concepts of Mathematics II, a spring course at Mississippi Valley State University offered to pre-service teachers in Elementary Education, the students used the Pacing Field Resources (borrowed from the GLOBE Landcover Investigation) as well as the example of a field notebook page to apply to the mathematical concept, Measures of Central Tendency. Using the handout the students were able to use their knowledge of mean to aid them in determining their pace per meter and to, ultimately, complete the handout given.

Afterwards, the students were placed into groups to use their data collected in each of their trials to provide their findings along with the mean, median, and mode in their fieldwork notebook page (students used the example fieldwork notebook page given at the NASA NICE workshop as a guide). Their fieldwork notebook page consisted of the following: date, name of project, group members' names, location (the students were able to use their cell phones to determine the latitude and longitude), daily objective, measurements or observations (the students constructed their tables using Microsoft Excel), and a summary. Since knowing how long one's pace is helpful in completing GLOBE field investigations, this experience was necessary in order to continue to use the material given from the NASA NICE Workshop. Overall, the students considered the activity to be fun and interesting as well as informative.
