NASA NICE Cohort Update

Upon my return from the NASA Conference; I made an effort for student teachers to utilize climate change during the student teaching semesters of internship. I have asked all student teachers to make an effort to educate learners in regard to climate change. However, I see most of the evidence in teaching from elementary education majors who have a concentration and or/ would like a supplemental endorsement in science and technology.

One example of students utilizing climate change lessons is to make entries in the electronic portfolio utilized at the university through Live Text. The 40 lesson plans cover a variety of basic climate issues such as the composition and structure of the atmosphere, why the Earth is hotter at the equator and the reasons for the seasons. The student teacher interns are encouraged to infuse the lessons into the Common Core Curriculum and delve into the details of climate change and its impacts. For example, there are several lessons that illustrate why sea level rises in a warming climate. Teachers can choose from among these 40 lessons and develop an excellent series on climate change.

I have asked the interns to make this part of internship service learning. The electronic portfolios are required to be thorough without being overwhelming, though teachers may have to help some students in understanding the more technical information.
