Elizabeth City State University and the Roanoke River Valley Consortium are pleased to submit the proposal, Dr. C. D. Turnage Pre-College Awards for Excellence in Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Technology to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The University is a Historically Black Institution, while the Consortium consist of five rural economically disadvantaged and impoverished predominantly minority school systems (Bertie -- 78%, Hertford -- 73%, Northampton -- 79%, Warren -- 77%, Weldon City -- 98%). The project represents a systematic approach to improving the performances of students in mathematics, science, engineering and technology in the region.
The University is committed to providing resources for this project. Dr. Deborah C. Fontaine, Assistant Director of Sponsored Programs, Contracts and Grants, and Dr. Sohindar S. Sachdev, Chairperson of Mathematics and Computer Science, will coordinate implementation. Other university administrators and personnel also will assist, as needed. The Planetarium, Greenhouse, Critical Thinking Lab, Network Resources for Training Lab (funded by NASA) and other university facilities will be used.
The goal of NASA Pre-College Awards for Excellence in Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Technology Program are consistent with the goals of Elizabeth City State University and the Roanoke River Balley Consortium for improving educational opportunities and academic performances of students in Northeastern North Carolina. The University is pleased to partner with the Consortium in this important venture. Please contact me for questions or additional information.
