During the week of September 27, 2004, the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) hosted a training session centered in utilizing census information and its application to remote sensing. This workshop was designed for the novice as well as the advanced user. It was a comprehensive training for individuals desiring to learn how to fully utilize Census 2000 datasets. The workshop was hosted by Mr. Anthony Fairfax, a Geodemographic Consultant with Census Channel in Hampton, Virginia. In 2001, Anthony Fairfax became the Demographer for the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute (CBC Institute). His central responsibility was to perform redistricting research and analysis of congressional districts represented by African Americans. From the Spring of 2001 through the Fall of 2002 He developed over 75 congressional redistricting plans in 12 different states.

Ms. Julie Stamper of the Pasquotank County GIS office also provided a session on the use of local GIS and census data for formulating local interactive maps. The maps she develops are utilized in tax, flood, and road maps for the county.

During the workshop, Dr. Winston Murray of the Tobago Community College visited the training session. He is currently working with Dr. Bonita Ewers of ECSU on a project entitled "Cross-Hemispheric Program, Afro-Caribbean Leadership Course Development".
